How do I register? Is there a fee?
Registration is done on opening night. A registration form is completed including artist information, a short description of the work, and a waiver for use of images of the work by Avant Garde/The Museum of New Mexico Foundation. There is no entrance fee, but a $3 donation is suggested to help cover costs. The show opens at 6:00; there's usually a pretty good-sized line of artists by 5:30.
What happens after I register?
You'll trade your registration form for a receipt and a set of numbered stickers. Work is hung anonymously, identified by number, to facilitate judging. We will have one or two volunteers helping to hang work. We will supply pushpins. Judging is typically completed, and results announced, around 8:00.
Yes, but we ask that you respect our efforts to maintain anonymous judging and a certain aesthetic by not putting artist-name-and-price cards next to your work. After judging, we print a listing of artist names and contact information, in order of entry number. This list stays with the show while it is up, with one intent being to facilitate sales. You have the option to remain anonymous, or to be identified by name but contacted via Avant Garde.
Do I have to leave my work up for the duration of the show?
If you need to remove work prior to scheduled take-down and pick-up on April 26th, please initiate arrangements at least 24 hours in advance by sending us an e-mail or by calling (505) 913-0764
Pick-up is Saturday, April 26, from noon until 4:00 PM. Bring the receipt you received at registration and a photo ID. If you cannot make it on this date and time, it is your responsibility to send someone with your registration receipt to collect your work for you. Avant Garde assumes no responsibility for work not picked up after 4:00 PM on Saturday, April 26, 2008.
Why do you only have judging for ages 21-45?
This reflects Avant Garde's dual mission of bringing a younger audience into the museums of New Mexico and supporting young, emerging artists. Rather than limiting ages of artists showing, we have chosen to limit the age range of artists elligible for judging and prizes.
The Stewart L. Udall Center for Museum Resources is on Museum Hill, at 725 Camino Lejo, just off Old Santa Fe Trail. It's across and a little up Camino Lejo from the Museum of International Folk Art. Better yet, here's a link for a Google map (opens a new window).
What exactly do you mean by "two-dimensional"?
What we really want is something that will mount to a wall, using pushpins, and is primarily two-dimensional in nature. Some relief is fine. We do not want free-standing or "pedestal" sculptures. If you have questions about the acceptabilty of your work, please send us an e-mail or call us at (505) 913-0764
What do you mean by "no matted work"? My work is on matte board.
It's absolutely fine if matte board is one of the media of your work. We don't want matting if it serves no function other than framing. If you have questions about the acceptabilty of your work, please contact us by e-mail or by calling (505) 913-0764
Can I volunteer to help during the opening?
Definitely. We have a lot of opportunities to help, both during show hours as well as behind the scenes. Please drop us a line or call us at (505) 913-0764
Will the DJ be as loud as last year? I kept asking to turn it down.
Will the DJ be as quiet as last year? I kept asking to turn it up.
Yes to both.
None of these are my questions.
